Moulded brown glass paste intaglio reproducing ancient sculpture of Rome in the early 19th century. Renaissance writers treated the story as a philosophical allegory of the search of the soul [Psyche] for union with Desire [Eros]. The outcome is pleasure.
Nineteen Tassie's copies from Pichler's Gems, illustrative of Roman history, mythology, and celebrated groups (X436.1-19). Some are from Marchant. These gems are by well-known engravers reproducing famous sculptures in Rome, such as the Apollo Belvedere and the Lacoon. The collection is in a green morocco case (X436.20).
