Watercolour of the mural of St Christopher from Ditteridge Church
Description
Watercolour of the mural of St Christopher from Ditteridge Church. Ditteridge Church in Box used to have a wall fresco of Saint Christopher which was uncovered in 1854. It has since been hidden again and a reproduction has been made to the left of the original. It is possible that this is either a watercolour of the reproduction or even the original when it was uncovered. It shows Christopher and Christ, the Angel of Doom weighing souls and a mermaid representing the false lure of flesly temptation. Presumably the original mural was whitewashed and hidden in the reformation and dissolution of the monasteries.
