John Cam Hobhouse was a politician and diarist. He was a friend of Lord Byron and travelled with him through Spain, Greece and Turkey in 1809. He was a partner in Whitbread's brewery, a fellow of the Royal Society and also one of the founders of the Royal Geographical Society. He was also an MP and held many positions in government including President of the Board of Control
