Candlestick, one of pair with S412
Description
Candlestick; one of a pair with S.412 and originally a set of four with S414-415.Old Sheffield plate. Square spreading base bordered with acanthus mouldingand ornamented with laural festoons suspended by bars from loops, enclosing paterae on three sides and an oval cartouche engraved with (?) SD in monogram, above a small square section moulded with cherubs' heads. Four-sided tripod form sterm with hoof base and goats' heads above, beneath oval strapwork enclosing a flower. Nozzle formed of fasces , alternately bande, set on a wasted fluted stem beneath acanthus moulding. Drip-pan borrdered also witha acanthus moulding. engraved (?) SD in monogram. Base loaded, wood filled and covered in green baize.Similar to Sheffield silver candlestick in the V & A, by John Winter C. 1774
