- Tankard and Cover. German. Three pegs. Body in later casing embossedwith scenes from Samson's life; cover chased with repousse floral border. Moulded lip band: moulded foot with band of floral chasing. Scroll-form handle: (auricular detail) double leaf thumb piece. Body appears different from lid and base, embossed disc screwed to foot.

Wealthy hosts in the seventeenth century would dazzle and impress their dinner guests with imposing displays of gold, silver and precious things piled up on tiered buffets against the walls. Highly decorated silver objects from the German cities of Nuremberg and Augsburg were particularly prized for their elaborate showiness.
