Dinner was the main meal of the day and could be served at any time between mid-day and 5.00pm. Wealthy households dined à la française – in the French manner. A grand dinner would consist of two courses followed by an elaborate dessert. Dishes for each course were symmetrically laid out on the table and the diners helped themselves to what was within reach. The greater the variety and number of dishes, the grander the dinner.
