- Description
- a) Cup and b) saucer, English, Chelsea, c. 1765. Soft-paste porcelain decorated in enamel colours and gilding, translucent glaze. The two-handled cup with dark mazarine blue ground overlaid with delicate gilding, two large reserve panels extending from rim to base on each side, decorated with, on one side, a lady standing, holding out her dress with left hand, holding a fan in her right hand, against background of simple foliage, on the other side a gentleman in puce breeches and cloak, large hat, right knee raised, leaning on a stick, against a similar background, gilt dentil edge to rim of cup, gilt line around base, single gilt spray inside the cup; the saucer decorated in similar manner with mazarine blue ground overlaid with gilding, two large reserve panels from well to rim, on one side a lady seated amidst foliage, on the other a gentleman standing, leaning on a stick, with foliage, the centre decorated with a gilt spray and gilt insect.The cup cracked and mended, the saucer scratched.
