Shopping was an essential part of the fashionable visit to Bath. Luxury shops first appeared here in the early eighteenth century when, following Queen Anne’s visits, wealthy and fashionable visitors came to the Spa in ever increasing numbers.
What people then called toys were not for children but were expensive novelties for adults. The famous toyshops of Bath sold items such as shoe buckles, canes, scent bottles, small portable cases known as etuis, and snuff boxes. Toyshops might also sell other luxuries such as porcelain, cosmetics, perfumes, hair powder and even scientific instruments.
