Vase in the form of a lamp, Wedgwood, black basalt ware, about 1780
Description
Oil lamp, one of a pair (with P24), black Basalt ware with relief decoration. Formed in four parts - base, stem, bowl combined and recorded as main vessel as they screw together with brass rod and nut. Lid separate. Square base with canted corners, the frieze decorated with paterae and anthemion below a rope moulding, above, the stem of the lamp decorated with gadrooning and small flowers. The body of the lamp with a formal design of relief moulded alternating acanthus leaves and stems of bell-flowers below a border of oak leaves. The top of the body with gadrooned decoration, the spout plain, surmounted by a female figure simply dressed in classical Greek style and sandals, reading an open book (possibly Clio?), seated astride the aperture of the vessel. In 2024 recorded in C1+ as main vessel as 1 part, separate lid as 2nd part and small knob as third part. Lid is marked with P25. Card hanging labels on all three parts.
