Augustin Edouart (1789-1861)
Gentleman Entering an Assembly Room, 1829
M187N
The figure adds materially to the effect that produces a Likeness, and combines with the outline of the face, to render a double Likeness in the same subject; from this combination of face and figure, arises the pleasing, and not less surprising result of a striking resemblance.
I have backgrounds adapted to the Silhouette Likenesses, which impart a greater interest than if they were pasted upon white paper only.
[Edouart's own words from A Treatise on Silhouette Likenesses, 1835]
