Cut paper silhouette: The Rev. C.Simeon preaching, Augustin Edouart, 1828
Description
Rectangular. One of eight Silhouettes of the Rev. Charles Simeon in various attitudes while preaching in a pulpit. These silhouettes which are all numbered, depict the sitter in various dramatic attitudes during a sermon. They all bear a damaged trade label, verso, annd all are signed and dated 1828.. They were executed in Cambridge and show the sitter in Trinity church in that city. From the pentimenti apparent on most of them it seems not unlikely the these silhouettes were the originals from which Edouart made others, some, probably, for his travelling exhibition. The portrayal of the sitter in this sequence is very lively and seems to border on the caricature. The sitter taking up various attitudes during his sermon. All these silhouttes have penimenti excert (F). All these silhouttes have pentimenti except (f). All have numbers on the reverse and all except (B) have numbers on the front. All are unframed.
