- Unknown Lady Oval.The sitter is in profile to the left. She wears a spotted muslin cap with bands across it. Her collar is frilled. An eyeglass hangs from a thin cord.This is a rather inferior example of a silhoutte on glass. The date is c1800Unframed.

Painted on glass, about 1800
Portraits on glass were painted on the back of the glass for viewing from the front. The artist
worked in reverse, applying surface details (like the dots on the dress) first. Once finished and backed with paper or silk, the image casts its own shadow, giving a sense of depth and life.
