Unknown Lady British School Painted on glass, about 1800 Portraits on glass were painted on the back of the glass for viewing from the front. The artist worked in reverse, applying surface details (like the dots on the dress) first. Once finished and backed with paper or silk, the image casts its own shadow, giving a sense of depth and life.
