Duke Henry the Devout (The Pious) of Saxony (1473–1541)
Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472–1553)
Oil on panel, c.1528
Henry was the second son of Albert, Duke of Saxony, and inherited his father’s title after the death of his older brother George in 1539. He supported religious reform and adopted Lutheranism as the state religion of Albertine Saxony.
Based in Wittenberg, Cranach the Elder was one of the most important northern Renaissance artists. He painted many prominent figures of the Protestant Reformation as well as serving as court painter to the prince-electors for fifty years.
