Description

Candelabrum, one of a pair, of white marble, bronze and ormolu, French, c. 1785.White marble covered bowl mounted with gilt engine-turned ormolu band around the centre, with a band of regular spreading ormolu leaves around the base, held in place by three bronze serpentine legs forming a tripod and centre vertical ormolu shaft, the tripod legs held in place in the centre by screws fixing them into a circular ormolu band, and at the base an ormolu tripod with concave sides on circular engin-turned feet, the legs of the tripod terminating at the base in hoof feet and at the top with heads of satyrs from which project elaborately curling horns sweeping round the upper side of the marble bowl. The top of the marble bowl surmounted with an ormolu finial decorated with anthemions, wheat ears and acanthus, from which spring three ormolu candle branches decorated with acanthus leaves, engine-turned candle cups and drip pans, a central stem surmounted by a semi-closed tulip bud and three ornamental scrolls or rinceaux from which are suspended d small linked chains. The entire tripod stands on a plain circular white marble base.
