- Description
- Cabinet (a) on stand (b), Black lacquer and gilt, probably Japanese, 1700-1750, on an English stand, c. 1750The upper cabinet of Japanese black lacquer with gilt ornametal decoration, made for the European market, enclosed by two doors with a brass central lock of scrolling form, landscape scenes and floral borders in gilt on the doors, the outer area decorated with stylised leaf, shell and interlaced decoration with lattice work roundels and corners. The Canted corners of the cabinet formed as pilasters and gilded. At the top, a broken arched and scrolled pediment with central shell motif, gilded. The insides of the doors decorated with gilt sprays of grasses and chrysanthemums, with two butterflies. The interior of the cabinet fitted up in three sections: In the recessed central area, stepped in threee levels, a long drawer decorated with stylised grass and flowers and brass drop handle, above this three drawers ( one set back) with knob handles, above these are two gilt pillars and in the recessed section are two vertical spaces set behind sliding gilt lacquer grills or screens. The central area flaked by two vertical spaces with sliding pierced screens.
