- Long Case Clock
- Description
- Longcase clock, English c, 1685, with eight-day movement signed on the dial by Daniel Quare (1647-1724), the oak case veneered with walnut and decorative marquetry of various woods.The case of typical form, the hood square, straight cornice below which is an open carved frieze lined with green silk to allow the sound of bells, the sides of the hood with glass panels, the opening front with glass panel bordered by a frame of decorative floral marquetry and two attached spiral-twisted ebonised columns, below the hood a generous convex moulding and concave ebonised mouldings, the trunk with plain sides veneered in walnut with simple stringing in ebony and boxwood, the front with plain walnut veneer at the edges, the door with ebonised half-round moulding to the edge, brass half round moulding to the lenticle, the main panel vennered in walnut with three panels of decorative marquetry, the upper containing two sprays of flowers emerging from stylised acanthus leaves, against an ebonised background, the central panel with similar marquetry including three stems of flowers among which are carnations and tulips, rising from stylised scrolling acanthus and an arabesque and a bird perched in the centre, the lower panel with marquetry in a similar style but with no bird; convex and concave ebonised and walnut mouldings above the base of the case, the sides of which are veneered in plain walnut, the front panel with marquetry of similar style to that of the door panel, below which are small ebonised bun feet.Eight day striking movement with seconds dial and calendar aperture. The dial with matted centre, silvered chapter ring engraved bewtwwen numerals VII and V "Daniel Quare, London", the decorative spandrels cast and chased with putti heads, very finely wrought blued steel hands.
