- Description
- Chest of drawers on stand, English c. 1680. Caracse of oak and pine, veneered in walnut and other woods, on a stand with spiral-turned supports and flat stretchers. The chest section divided into two short and three long drawers. The top decorated in marquetry veneers forming a central oval panel containing flowers and a bird in the centre, sith scrolling acanthus leaves, surrounded by a band of "oyster" walnut venners with boxwood stringing, the spandrels in each corner consisting of marquetry panels of floral sprays with birds. Each side decorated with an arched panel of marquetry with vases of flowers, mainly tulips, against a dark veneer background, surrounded by walnut "oyster" veneers.The fronts of the drawers decorated in floral marquetry oval panels with oyster veneer surrounds, boxwood banding, brass drop handles and escutcheons cast with pairs of cherubs. The drawers have pine fronts, oak sides and bases.The stand of oak with flat stretchers, veneered with walnut, with six legs walnut twist turned legs and bun feet.
