- Description
- Chair, one of a set of six and two armchairs, English, mahogany c. 1805. The chair with scroll-back design, the top rail turned and carved with gadrooned bars on either side of a tablet inlaid with satinwood and ebony stringing, the central part of the open back composed of two opposing curved cross-sections between straight horizontal upper and lower rails, the uprights curved and reeded, plain seat rail which is slightly bowed at front, drop in seat now covered in modern material, the straight legs of of circular form, tapering and reeded, fixed by delicate cross stretchers. Back legs chamfered and swept back.Shows the influence of French Directoire style and Sheraton's later designs, e.g. Cabinet Dictionary 1803. See also London Cabinet-maker's Book of Prices.
