Armchair, one of a set of eight chairs in the Sheraton style

Description

Armchair, one of a pair and set of six side chairs, English, mahogany c. 1805. The chair with scroll-back design, the top rail turned and carved with gadrooned bars on either side of a tablet inlaid with satinwood and ebony stringing, the central part of the open back composed of two opposing curved cross-sections between straight horizontal upper and lower rails, the uprights curved and reeded, sweeping arms extending to baluster shaped uprights affixed to side of a plain seat rail which is slightly bowed at the front, drop in seat now covered in modern material, the straight legs of circular form, tapering and redded, fixed by delicate crossed stretchers. Back legs chambered and swept back. Shows influence of French Directoire style and Sheraton's late designs, e. g. Cabinet Dictionary 1803. See also London Cabinet-Makers Bookk of Prices.
