Chippendale cabinet
Description
Cabinet on stand, of beech and pine, English about 1760, the stand probably early 19th century. The cabinet with glazed sides and front opening doors, originally with glazing bars but these removed for display purposes and now fitted with single sheets of modern glass. Around the top of the cabinet a small openwork gallery , the entire surface of the wood covered in delicate japanned ornament in imitation of oriental lacquer in black and gold on a gesso ground, depicting small landscape scenes on the borders of the front doors, and flowers on the sides, with trellis patterns at the corners. The stand also decorated in black and gold on gesso ground with larger floral patterns in a different style.
