Cup and saucer: Leda and the Swan Chinese Porcelain, about 1740 C754 Exports of Chinese porcelain to Europe were massive and the Chinese developed types of decoration specifically for the export market. European merchants also sent European prints to China to be copied onto porcelain. Some were based on famous paintings such as Correggio’s Leda and the Swan (C754). In others painters painstakingly reproduced the black engraved lines of western prints. With their very different traditions of perspective and composition, Chinese decorators sometimes struggled to translate European images successfully.
