Description
A large black basalt covered vase, the body of the vase decorated with two relief scenes of Prometheus chained to a rock, also decorated with engine turning, the handles composed of classical female termsholding serpents, the neck of the vase decorated with relief ram's head and festoons, the cover of conical form, mounted on a black basalt base.

Bebeath the Prometheus reliefe on the vase:"J.Voyez Sculpt 1769 and J. KelingOn the base: MADE BY H. PALMER HANLEY STAFFORDSE.

Prometheus Vase Humphrey Palmer's Ceramic Factory Black basalt ware, dated 1769 C370 Modelled by the talented but volatile Frenchman Jean Voyez. After being imprisoned for stealing from Josiah Wedgwood, Voyez went to work for Wedgwood’s rival Humphrey Palmer.
