Description
Figure of Neptune, English, Chelsea-Derby, c. 1775. Soft-paste porcelain decorated in enamel colours, translucent glaze. An elaborate sculpture of the god Neptune in contraposto, a crown on his head, naked except for a flowing robe, tinted yellow with pink lining and decorated with sprays of flowers, arms raised and originally holding a trident (now missing), standing before a large green and purple-scaled dolphin from whose mouth is issuing a stream of blue water, its tail raised and twisting around the side of the figure of the god, upon an elaborate high base of shells and seaweed painted in enamel naturalistic colours.

Neptune Chelsea-Derby porcelain factory Soft-paste porcelain, about 1775 C228 These porcelain figures appear in the photograph of Sir William taken towards the end of his life. They must have been among his most treasured possessions.
