Time Clipping the Wings of Love, Chelsea-Derby Porcelain Factory, soft-paste porcelain, about 1775
Description
Figure, English, probably Chelsea-Derby, c. 1775. Soft-paste porcelain decorated in enamel colours with gilding, translucent glaze. The male figure of Time seated on a plinth with a balustrade, the upper torso naked, with large wings, the head depicting an old man, partly bald and bearded, around his lower body a white cloth decorated with sprays of flowers and gilding, a puce lining, bare feet; on his lap and held by his arms a naked figure of Cupid with turquoise blue loin cloth over left hip, pink and yellow small wings, the figure protesting as the figure of Time clips his right wing with shears (now broken) held in Time's right hand; at the feet of both figures an hourglass, a purple scythe propped against Time's left shin, a quiver of arrows, and a globe, all on an elaborate Rococo base, at the front small gilt scrolls, to either side an undecorated skull and a coronet, both in large scrolls highlighted in gold, to the right an Ionic capital.
