Description
Document, The Will of Thomas Barrett, 1757. Ink on parchment with additional document and seal attached.Main text reads. "In the name of God Amen. I, Mr. Thomas Barrett Gunner of his Majesty's Ship Biddeford being in Bodily Health and of Sound and Disposing Mind and Memory and considering the prils and dangers of the Seas and other uncertainties of this transitory Life, Do for avoiding Controversies after my decease make publish and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner following (that is to say) first I recommend my Soul to God that gave it and my Body I commit to the Earth or Sea as it shall please God to order and as for and concerning all my Wordly Estate I Give Bequeath and Dispose thereof as followeth That is to say all money wages prize money and Stock in Funds or Trade I leave and bequeath unto Mr. Francis Holburne eldest son to Admiral Francis Holburne Also I leave and bequeath all my wearing Apparel Linnen Woollen Goods or Utensils unto Mr. John Fleming Librarian in the Inner Temple London Wages Sum and Sums of Money Lands Tenements Good Chattels and Etate whatsoever as shall be any ways due owing or belonging unto me at the time of my Decease I do Give Devise and Bequeath the same unto the above mentioned Mr. Francis Holburne Eldest son to Admiral Francis Holburne and I do hereby nominate and appoint Admiral Francis Holburne executor of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former other Wills Testaments and Deeds of Gift by me at any time heretofore made and I do ordain and ratifie these presents to stand and be for and as my olny last Will and Testament In Witness whereof to this my said Will I have set my Hand and Seal the 1st January 1757 30th Year of the Reign of King George II over Great Britain France and Ireland -Thos. Barrett in the presence of E Knowler, Chris: CarrI the within named Thomas Barrett the Estator do by this Codicil confirm my within written Will but do hereby desire I may have a decent Funeral becoming my Station in Life and do remit the Management of such my Funeral to mrs. Mary Ann Gom(?) where I now lodge and do hereby desire and order my Executor forthwith to pay and discharge all the Expences there of Witness my Hand and Seal the 5th June 1757Thomas Barrett Witness Chris Carr.Frances Holburne the Wife and Lawful Attorney of Frances Holburne Esq., Vice Admiral of Blue sole Executor named in the Will (with a codicial annexed) of Thomas Barrett late belonging to His Majesty's Ship Biddeford deceased... for the use and benefit of the said Executor now at Sea Given at london 10th August 1757.
