Miss M.Holburne letter, Bequest of TWH collection to be plced in a museum in BathDated: 18/06/1882To Charles Coates of no. 10 Circus, Bath, M. D., Charles William Mackillop of no. 14 Royal Crescent, Bath, Esquire, Robert Stickney Blaine of Summerhill, Bath, Esq., The Revd Henry H. Winwood of no. 11 Cavendish Crescent, Bath, M. A. and Mr James Rainey of Southgate Street, Bath, By a Codicil dated the 18 th day of June 1882 to my Will dated the 18 th day of December 1872 I have bequeathed to you my Plate Pictures Engravings Books Bronzes China Diamonds Jewellery and Articles of Vertu which might be in my house at my decease or at my Bankes or Silversmiths for me. And I have further bequeathed to you a Legacy of Ten Thousand pounds and the residue of my personal Estate and Effects as joint Tenants for your own use and benefit absolutely. I have however done so relying on your honour to carry out my wishes hereinafter expressed with respect to the same bequests which wishes I do not desire to be legally binding on you.My wish is that the extensive collection of Plate Pictures Engravings China Books and other articles of vertu formed by my late brother Sir Thomas William Holburne Baronet together with my own Jewels and Personal Ornaments shall be placed in a Museum in Bath for public inspection under such rules as you or your successors shall from time to time direct. My wish is that the collection shall be called The Holburne of Menstrie Collection and I particularly desire that no article of it shall be moved from the Museum on loan or for any purpose whatever except for necessary repairs, but shall always be kept there. I also wish that a suitable building shall be provided as soon as possible for the reception and preservation of my said collection and I leave to you and to any successors appointed by you the fullest power to frame rules for the admission of the public either free or otherwise and to accept donations of money or similar objects of vertu so as to enlarge the collection and make it the nucleus for the establishment of a museum of Fine Art for the City of Bath.I also empower you to make what changes you think desirable in regard to the Collection so that my object of preserving it as intact as possible may be borne in mind but the Collection and the Museum in which it is contained must be called 'The Holburne of Menstrie Museum'.With the object of preserving my Family Vault in the Lansdowne Cemetery I request you to appropriate \'a3300 to provide a fund the income of which would be applied by you and your successors to that purpose.Dated this 18 th day of June 1882I am, GentlemenYours etcMAB Holburne
