- Letter from William Daling to Admiral Holburne, re Holburne family memorials at Richmond Church, 1761." London 12th Sept. 1761.Sir, A few days ago I went to Richmond with Mr. Roubillac, a Statuary which a friend of Mr. Wilson's recommended him to, & one of eminence, who made the monument for the great Duke of Argyll, that for Sir Peter Warren &c, & he viewed the place; The Pillars are so small and low that it must be fixed against the Wall, and he has pitched upon a place very conspicuous, where the Church Wardens have given leave for it to be put, the charge for which is always \'a310:10: - Mr. Roubillac is a very civil man, and says he shall put up a very pretty thing, but cannot he think do one under \'a3200, however he thinks it best to wait on you at Portsmouth, which place he has never been at for he says writing to and fro is troublesome and there may be mistakes & he can best explain himself & know your mind by a little conversation; He proposes to be only one day there, for the other two will be spent in going down in the Machine and coming up, which charge he says had much better be borne than that any mistake in a thing of this kind should be made. I told him I would acquaint you of it and he will wait your answer to this. The present Grave Stone is peiced. The black Namur Stone is very durable, and I think the present inscription may be shortened. I have inserted it on the other side. In the inscription which you sent me for to be put on the Monument for your Lady, her Grandfather is named Richd but on the stone it is Joseph which latter I suppose is right.
