John Sargent the Younger (1715-1791)
Allan Ramsay (1713-1784)
Oil on canvas, 1749
John Sargent (whose father’s portrait hangs nearby) worked in the Navy Office and was a Member of Parliament. He became Director of the Bank of England in 1757 and as a private merchant he was heavily involved in the slave trade through various commercial partnerships.
This portrait was painted in 1749 in celebration of Sargent’s marriage to Rosamund Chambers, whose cousin Christopher Chambers became one of Sargent’s business partners as well as a leading figure in the African Company of Merchants.
