Rev. Robert Carter Thelwall and his Family
George Stubbs (1724-1806)
Oil on panel, 1776
Although Stubbs set out to be a portrait painter, he was soon famous for his extraordinary depictions of horses. The Reverend Robert Carter (1721-1787), later Carter Thelwall, commissioned this portrait to celebrate his marriage in middle age to the heiress Charlotte Nelthorpe. They are pictured on a drive through their estate in Lincolnshire with their little daughter. An avenue of trees leads from their house, Redbourne Hall, to St. Andrew's Church (at the centre of the composition) where Carter was Vicar.
