Pembroke Castle Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) Watercolour on paper About 1829-1830 This is one of the 96 original watercolours made by Turner for the series of engravings, Picturesque Views in England and Wales, published from 1827 to 1838. With this very broad theme, the subjects for the publication were Turner's own choice ¬- some were developed from drawings made as early as the 1790s, others arising from a sketching tour made specially for the purpose in 1830. Pembroke Castle Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) Watercolour on paper, about 1829-30 This is one of ninety-six watercolours Turner made to illustrate a book, Picturesque Views in England and Wales by the engraver Charles Heath. In his image of an ancient castle, Turner suggests how present-day activities are carried out against the background of the past. The fishermen on the shore load a basket with their assorted catch. Other boats still at sea are tossed about by a squall, while the sun breaks through the clouds. Bequest of Ernest E Cook through the Art Fund, 1955 A367
