Dr Rice Charleton (1710-1789)
Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788)
Oil on canvas, 1764
Dr Charleton was one of Bath’s most renowned physicians. Medical men were very powerful in Bath and their patronage was important for Gainsborough. Charleton was Gainsborough’s family doctor and friend. He collected many paintings by the artist, including landscapes. Some may have been given to him by Gainsborough as payment for medical treatment. By depicting his friend in a landscape, the artist presents the doctor as a man of feeling as well as science.
