A Horse and Dog in a Stable George Morland (about 1763–1804) Oil on canvas, 1791 Signed G Morland 1791 Like his father Henry Robert Morland, George Morland operated at the commercial end of the art market. As his father’s apprentice, he mainly produced copies of Dutch landscapes. The Dutch influence is evident in the style and homely subject of this small-scale stable scene. These everyday subjects, modest both in scale and price, proved very popular. Despite his commercial success, Morland spent most of his money on drink and died young. A363 Bequest of Ernest E. Cook through the Art Fund, 1955
