A Cottage among Trees Patrick Nasmyth (1787–1831) Oil on Panel, 1826 Nasmyth was taught by his father, the great Scottish landscape painter Alexander Nasmyth. He was strongly influenced by such Dutch seventeenth-century masters as Wynants and Hobbema, particularly their attention to detail. Here even the figure at the cottage door and the tiny receding travellers on the winding path have a Dutch air. The date, 1826, is marked above the window of the cottage. Bequest of Ernest E. Cook through the Art Fund, 1955 A362
