Oil painting: Landscape with a Drover by Jan Asselyn, oil on panel, c.1640
Description
Small picture. A drover, wearing a black hat and red tunic, entering the scene from the right, encourages a bull across the foreground with a long staff. The foreground is the bank of a lake, which is visible on the right of the picture, behind the drover and reaches the horizon. A black goat and three sheep on the left of the picture lead the eye into the middle ground, where trees with rusty, autumnal orange-coloured leaves grow on on a rocky outcrop, reaching the top of the picure. The colours are warm, and light enters from the right. The grass is olive green. The sky is cloudy, the horizon is blue, and in the distance to the left of the picture is a blue-grey rocky outcrop.
