- Description
- A cottage to the left of the picture, surrounded by trees and beyond it, a church spire. A woman stops to talk to a figure in the window. The cottage is on the bank of a river which flows from right to left across the foreground. A small boat on the river, some figures, animals and distant cottages on the bank. This does not seem to fit with the current oeuvre of Hermanus Donselaer and it seems to have been based on paintings by van Ruysdael, Van Goyen and their followers. There is a very similar painting by Frans de Hulst entitled Village on a River (https://research.rkd.nl/nl/detail/https%3A%2F%2Fdata.rkd.nl%2Fimages%2F308466?image=0&imageId=https%253A%252F%252Fdata.rkd.nl%252Fdigital-objects%252F10854064&itemUri=https%253A%252F%252Fdata.rkd.nl%252Fdigital-objects%252F10854064)
