Adam naming the Animals and Landscape with Animals entering the Ark Circle of Roelandt Savery (1576–1639) Oil on copper, c. 1610 These two tiny paintings were made in Antwerp, probably to decorate a piece of furniture. Both scenes from the book of Genesis are dominated by the Tree of Life. The great tree shelters and nourishes a menagerie of joyful birds and beasts, both exotic and familiar. A191 & A178
Landscape with Adam naming the Animals Circle of Roelandt Savery (1576-1639) Oil on copper, 12.2 x 18.5 cm This small picture on copper uses a Biblical subject to depict a landscape peopled with beasts both exotic and familiar. Set in the Garden of Eden, God the Father (in a red cloak) grants Adam dominion over the animals as they jump and skip around the Tree of Life. Among the animals are lions and leopards, a pair of rabbits and, on the left, a unicorn. A178
