The Death of St Andrew Avellino
Giambettino Cignaroli (1706-1770)
Oil on canvas, c. 1749
This painting is probably a preliminary study for the altarpiece by Cignaroli in the church of St James in Crema, Lombardy, dated 1749. St Andrew Avellino (1521-1608) was a reforming priest who suffered a fatal stroke at the altar, while celebrating Mass. Here he is depicted collapsing on the altar steps while a vision of an angel opens above him. He is accompanied by Sts Aloysius Gonzaga and Stanlislaus Kostka.
