Half-length, in painted oval, slightly to right, eyes front: long brown peruke, lace fall, plain armour; wearing the (then) riband of the Garter. William III (1650–1702) when Prince of Orange Willem Wissing (c.1656–1687) Oil on canvas, c.1685 This fine portrait of William of Orange wearing the riband of the Order of the Garter pre-dates his acceptance of the English throne in 1688. The artist was also Dutch: Wissing came to England from Amsterdam around 1680 and became a major court painter. A10
