Elisabeth Frink’s etchings rank among the most personal renditions of The Canterbury Tales. Following a group of pilgrims travelling to Canterbury Cathedral who compete in a storytelling contest, the tales lend themselves well to Frink’s interpretative approach. Like Chaucer’s characters, her simply drawn figures and animals are both satirical and sublime. Often left as white spaces, they contrast with the vibrant backgrounds behind them.
