NEW ACQUISITION Self Portrait John Lacon (active 1740-1757) Watercolour on ivory, 1755 Inscribed on backing paper: Bath / Ap. 26 1755 / Given me by the ingenious Artist himself / Mr John Lacon This is a rare example of a dated portrait by the miniaturist by John Lacon. When not painting, Lacon ran a puppet-theatre in Bath with his family, featuring life-size ‘Wax Figures, Which have all the just Motions and Gestures of Human Life’. He has portrayed himself as a gifted artist holding a palette and brushes. 2013.1 Acquired with the assistance of the V&A Purchase Grant Fund, The Art Fund, the bequest of Miss P A Titleboam and private donations
