John Lacon (active 1740-1757)
Watercolour on ivory, 1755
Inscribed on backing paper: Bath / Ap. 26 1755 / Given me by the ingenious Artist himself / Mr John Lacon
This is a rare example of a dated portrait by the miniaturist by John Lacon. When not painting, Lacon ran a puppet-theatre in Bath with his family, featuring life-size ‘Wax Figures, Which have all the just Motions and Gestures of Human Life’. He has portrayed himself as a gifted artist holding a palette and brushes.
