Mrs Bland, Mrs Booth and John Bannister in ‘The Children in the Wood’ Samuel De Wilde (1748-1832) Oil on canvas, 1794 The scene is from a sentimental musical comedy based on the legend of the Babes in the Wood. Walter has abducted two children. After losing the children, he returns home to his mother and his sweetheart tries to comfort him with a song. Suddenly, he is terrified by a ghostly knocking. De Wilde has captured this moment of drama as Walter freezes, clutching the table in fear. The Somerset Maugham Collection, transferred from the National Theatre 2010.2.15
