Etching: Mary Wickstead, Thomas Worlidge, c.1766
Description
Drypoint etching of a lady seated, three-quarter length, facing left with head turned to look forward. In Renaissance-style dress with tightly braided hair and standing collar. Seated at an easel with a painting of two figures embracing. She holds a brush in her right hand and mahlstick (a padded stick used to steady the canvas) in her left. This drawing by Thomas Worlidge is of his wife Mary Worlidge nee Wickstead. In this drawing he has drawn her as Sofonisba Anguissola and it is based on Anguissola's self portrait at an easel.
