Lettice Mary Banks (1716–1757) William Hoare (1707–1792) Oil on canvas, late 1740s This is typical of the framed portraits William Hoare of Bath made for the city’s wealthier visitors, and Lettice Mary Banks was a typical visitor. The eldest daughter of a Lincolnshire MP, she travelled here several times to take the waters with ailing members of her family. Her nephew was the great naturalist Sir Joseph Banks. Head-and-shoulders portraits were easy to transport from Bath to the client’s home, and Hoare enhanced them with these elegantly carved Palladian-style frames. 2003.29 Purchased with the assistance of the MLA/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, the Art Fund and a Patron of the Museum, 2003
