- Description
- Sofa table, English c. 1820-30, of mahogany with satinwood marquetry, a single standard at each end, dividing into two sabre legs, terminating in brass shoes incorporating brass castors, the centre of the top rises to an angle of 45 degrees in gradated steps by the rests sliding in two brass ratchets. There is also a fixed flap which allows the top to have a slight, two inch incline if preferred. The two D- end flaps are separated from the rising centre by 2 inches at each side, and are supported in the raised position by two folding brackets at each side. There are two drawers, each with original brass knobs, the right one fitted as a writing drawer with compartments. the locks are original and bear the incised stamp "GR patent", implying, presumably, George IV. Due to the rising centre, the table has a front and a back. there are two false drawer fronts with matching knobs at the back.
