The Sanderson Children William Tate (1748–1806) Oil on canvas, 1775 This group portrait of Elizabeth, Margaret and Matthew Sanderson with a book of riddles was painted at their home near Wakefield. They are dressed in ‘Vandyck’ costumes, inspired by portraits from the early seventeenth century. William Tate, a pupil of Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797), spent most of his career in Liverpool and Manchester. In 1804, just two years before his death, he moved to Bath. 1995.4 Presented by Miss JM Oldfield and Mrs D Ball, 1995
