Description
Armchair, English c. 1675 with restoration. Walnut with canework.The frame of the chair of carved walnut, the back formed of outer spiral-turned uprights with small finials, top rail carved with central crown motif and scrolling leaves, the lower rail similar, central back panel with two carved side sections and plainer centre bar dividing two panels of canework, elongated scroll-end arms on spiral-turned supports, straight seat rail and canework seat, the lower part of the frame composed of spirally-turned uprights and stretchers fixed into rectangular blocks. A loose squab cushion of early 20th century date, worked by the donor's mother.The chair has been subject to considerable restoration. Possibly the back panel replaced or substantially re-carved, incised decoration added to the upper sides of the seat rails, feet cut down and blocks added to rear leags to prevent the chair from tipping, the seat re-caned (now with a supporting wooden panel) and the whole varnished. The arms possibly from another chair but of c 1675 date.
