Colonna Antonina (The Column of Marcus Aurelius), from Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome) by Piranesi
Description
This was one of the Vedute by Piranesi and part of his Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome) series. This series took over three decades of his life and included views of the Colosseum, Arch of Titus, the Pantheon and many other monuments throughout Rome. These were particularly popular with grand tourists as souvenirs. This prints shows the Column of Marcus Aurelius which was made between about 180 and 193 AD. It is a victory column modelled after Trajan's column which was used to celebrate and commemorate the emperor's reign and his victories in the Macromannic Wars against the Germanic and Sarmatian tribes.
